Toys with rules. That's what games are. One could takes this as a dismissal. A simplification that treats games as something children enjoy but are cast aside when childhood is over. I see it as a way of appreciating games. Over the years I have seen games try to duplicate reality with the precision of the string theory. They try to add layer upon layer of rules to account for everything only to collapse under their own weight. I have also seen games that seem like thinly veiled algebra equations that become predictable. I have played games that are nothing but sleigh rides.
